ADVENTURE SKETCHING WITH MARIA CORYELL-MARTIN

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Please click the VIDEO STREAM to view this class as a recording! This program is being presented exclusively for conference attendees, and is not to be shared or copied without permission of the presenter and conference organizer.

Prepare for sketching on your adventures, whether out in your garden or on mountain trails! We'll explore fundamental sketching techniques for creating colorful and expressive journal pages using ink and watercolor. We'll practice gesture, contour, and thumbnail sketches to quickly capture a sense of place and open up creative flow and inquiry. All levels welcome!

SUPPLIES: Journal, pen, colors and brush if you have them.

---Supplies used by Maria:
  •  Paper/Sketchbook: I recommend a minimum of 80lb paper for light watercolor/mixed-media. I prefer Moleskine watercolor journals and Stillman and Birn Alpha and Beta softcover sketchbooks. I used an Aquabee Super Deluxe 9” x 9” book in my workshop.
  •  Waterproof Pen: try a waterproof pen such as a Sharpie Fine Pen or Copic Multiliner. You may also enjoy a brush pen or fountain pen. I love the Pentel Brush Pen and Platinum Carbon Fountain Pen which I used in my workshop. Other popular fountain pens for sketching include the Lamy Safari and Sailor Fude 55 pen. You can learn more about a selection of the pens I use on my blog.
  •  Watercolors: please feel free to paint with what you have! I prefer Pocket Palettes for their portability and versatile layouts. The Daniel Smith Essential Colors Set is a great starting place for watercolors. This blog post details the colors in my warm and cool Pocket Palettes from my workshop.
  • Brushes: I prefer water brushes and travel brushes for field sketching. I like the oval barrel of Pentel Brushes, they don’t roll away! They are available in a standard and mini size, I typically use the medium tip. I use Rosemary and Co travel brushes and suggest a #8 round (such as the R10 Synthetic or R13 sable blend) as a fabulous brush to start with.
  • Extras: Collapsible water cup, paper towel or soft rag to wipe your brushes. I prefer using blue shop towels which can be rinsed and reused.
