Journals filled with plants and birds? What about geology? Ryan Petterson, director of Field Education, School of Earth, Energy and Environmental Sciences at Stanford University, will introduce you to basic geology to get you started seeing and sketching the geology around you. Ryan promises to do his best to refrain from incomprehensible jargon while we visit several different locations in eastern California to see a broad range of California history, including volcanoes, glaciers, and ancient sea beds. Though we will certainly do drawing and sketching along the way, we will mainly focus on tips and processes for making observations about the geology that you can see for yourself. You will come away with a simple toolbox to start noticing and recording the stories in the landscapes and rocks that surround you.
SUPPLIES: Journal, pen, colors and brush if you have them.

I hope you had a great first day of the conference! I just want to give you some information about the Virtual Field Trip tomorrow to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
This should be a fun, low-stress trip. As always, your level of engagement is completely up to you. You can simply enjoy a guided tour of the geology of the Sierra Nevada, or you can get out your sketchbook, pens, and paints to journal along with me.
No special materials are required. I’ll be using a plain sketchbook and a basic ballpoint pen. If there’s time, I might splash on some watercolor. Feel free to use whatever medium you’d like! This virtual field trip will primarily be about seeing the rocks (even when there are distracting trees and birds!), starting to represent geology in your journals, and having fun with the wide-ranging, and often unexpected, stories that you can discover lurking in the rocks.
For the trip I will be sharing two different windows with you. One will be a document camera view of my sketchbook. You’ll get to see how I might sketch the features we’ll be seeing. I’ll also add some notes to help everyone follow along (correct spelling not guaranteed). In the other window will be the virtual field. These will be spherical photos, connected and mapped to help us immerse in the location. For those that have smaller screens, feel free to sit back and let me walk you through the tour. If you have a larger screen (or two screens! Me = Jealous), and your bandwidth can manage it, you can also have the virtual tour up in your own browser window. This will allow you to look where you want to look!
Either way, feel free to browse the tour beforehand. It is not intended as self-guided, but you can just wander around and explore. What do you notice on your own? What do you think you’d journal about if you were here by yourself?
