ADVENTURE SKETCHING WITH MARIA CORYELL-MARTIN
Please click the VIDEO STREAM to view this class as a recording! This program is being presented exclusively for conference attendees, and is not to be shared or copied without permission of the presenter and conference organizer.

Prepare for sketching on your adventures, whether out in your garden or on mountain trails! We'll explore fundamental sketching techniques for creating colorful and expressive journal pages using ink and watercolor. We'll practice gesture, contour, and thumbnail sketches to quickly capture a sense of place and open up creative flow and inquiry. All levels welcome!

SUPPLIES: Journal, pen, colors and brush if you have them.

---Supplies used by Maria:
  •  Paper/Sketchbook: I recommend a minimum of 80lb paper for light watercolor/mixed-media. I prefer Moleskine watercolor journals and Stillman and Birn Alpha and Beta softcover sketchbooks. I used an Aquabee Super Deluxe 9” x 9” book in my workshop.
  •  Waterproof Pen: try a waterproof pen such as a Sharpie Fine Pen or Copic Multiliner. You may also enjoy a brush pen or fountain pen. I love the Pentel Brush Pen and Platinum Carbon Fountain Pen which I used in my workshop. Other popular fountain pens for sketching include the Lamy Safari and Sailor Fude 55 pen. You can learn more about a selection of the pens I use on my blog.
  •  Watercolors: please feel free to paint with what you have! I prefer Pocket Palettes for their portability and versatile layouts. The Daniel Smith Essential Colors Set is a great starting place for watercolors. This blog post details the colors in my warm and cool Pocket Palettes from my workshop.
  • Brushes: I prefer water brushes and travel brushes for field sketching. I like the oval barrel of Pentel Brushes, they don’t roll away! They are available in a standard and mini size, I typically use the medium tip. I use Rosemary and Co travel brushes and suggest a #8 round (such as the R10 Synthetic or R13 sable blend) as a fabulous brush to start with.
  • Extras: Collapsible water cup, paper towel or soft rag to wipe your brushes. I prefer using blue shop towels which can be rinsed and reused.

Please click the VIDEO STREAM to view this class as a recording! This program is being presented exclusively for conference attendees, and is not to be shared or copied without permission of the presenter and conference organizer.

*******

Do you find yourself struggling to carry a bulging field bag, filled with too many supplies you almost never use? Are you sometimes hamstrung because it takes you so long to set up your sketching gear that you don’t stop and capture small and delightful details? This class will be like a diet for your field sketching kit! Roseann has been keeping nature journals for 40 years, and has refined her gear to a light-and-fast stand-up field sketching kit comprising her easy-to-make (and inexpensive) field journal, a fountain pen, a single brush, and a mini paint kit with cyan, magenta, yellow, burnt sienna, and a dark blue (indanthrone). She’ll share her ideas and get you started with easy color-mixing with just 3-5 colors. Lighten your load, de-clutter your gear, and focus on what you love: observing, sketching, and painting.

SUPPLIES: Journal, pen, brush, and watercolors. For this class I use transparent, mostly cool colors (all Daniel Smith): manganese blue hue or cerulean; quinacridone rose; aureolin or chrome yellow (neutral yellow); burnt sienna; indanthrone blue (dark, warm blue).

SKETCHING ANIMALS AT REST & IN MOTION
Please click the VIDEO STREAM to view this class as a recording! This program is being presented exclusively for conference attendees, and is not to be shared or copied without permission of the presenter and conference organizer.

*******

When you are trying to capture a moving animal target on a journal page, it is helpful to understand a bit about how their bodies work and move, and how that compares to the movements of our human bodies. In this session, we'll get familiar with the characteristic postures and poses of mammals and birds as they go about their business and enjoy moments of repose.

SUPPLIES: Journal and pen.

UPDATE FROM MARK, OCT. 8, via email:

Mark Simmons writes:
Hello, everyone!

I hope you’re all enjoying the conference so far. It’s been pretty much non-stop great stuff! Hopefully we’ll make it to the weekend without our heads exploding from too much awesomeness.

As promised, I’ve put together a couple of handouts for our Saturday class, Sketching Animals At Rest & In Motion. I’ve posted these on our class page, over at the main schedule site

[see this page]

If, for some reason, you’re having trouble, I also put these handouts in a Google Drive folder:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ojbcLNDnTc9nKzgJJJrlFdE6GkjQ9I53?usp=sharing

The first handout, wildwonder_animals_handout.pdf, includes a brief introduction, a few tips on quick-sketching animals, and some detailed notes on mammal and bird movement. You don’t need to study the movement notes ahead of time! I just put them in because I’ll reference these notes in my presentation without discussing them in detail, and I thought that might be frustrating if you didn’t have them yet.

The other handout, wildwonder_animals_images.pdf, contains some photos we can use for drawing practice during the class. Most of these are my own pictures, but Ashok Khosla very kindly gave me permission to include some photos of birds in flight from his wonderful website "Seeing Birds" (https://www.seeingbirds.com/). We won’t use all of these during the class, but we should have time for a couple.

Enjoy the conference, and I’ll look forward to drawing with you on Saturday!

UPDATE FROM MARK OCT. 10:

Hello, everyone! Thank you so much for attending today’s Sketching Animals at Rest & in Motion class (or viewing the replay in the future, depending).

As I mentioned, I’ve posted my slideshow presentation (in PDF format) on the Sched site:

https://wildwonder2020.sched.com/event/eGU3/sketching-animals-at-rest-in-motion

And also in this Google Drive folder:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ojbcLNDnTc9nKzgJJJrlFdE6GkjQ9I53?usp=sharing

The slideshow file is "wildwonder_animalmotion_mini.pdf". You’ll also find a handout with some general tips and movement notes, and a set of practice images, including some awesome birds from Ashok Khosla’s "Seeing Birds" website (https://www.seeingbirds.com/).

I packed a lot of material into today’s class, and I salute you for hanging in there! Hopefully these notes and files will help you revisit the parts that went by too quickly. Feel free to quiz me about things by email and in the Facebook Nature Journal Club group, too! Sketching animals is a pretty deep subject, and as you may suspect, it’s one I always enjoy talking about.

All the best, and happy critter-drawing!

--  Mark

P.S. I gather some people were asking about other Mark-related information and resources. I don’t have a lot available online, aside from a couple of recordings of past Nature Journal Club workshops, and my website (http://www.ultimatemark.com/) and social media presence have been a little neglected. If I’m doing something exciting, I’ll probably mention it on Facebook and possibly on my Twitter account (@toysdream). Thank you!

TINY WORLDS - ZOOMING IN TO SEE COMMON SUBJECTS IN NEW WAYS
Please click the VIDEO STREAM to view this class as a recording! This program is being presented exclusively for conference attendees, and is not to be shared or copied without permission of the presenter and conference organizer.

****

In this class, we will look closely at small natural items and enlarge them in our sketchbook to show off all of their intricacies. Rosalie will show you how to get proportions right when you enlarge items on your page, and she’ll share several tips for capturing small details and textures. By taking mundane objects such as a pinecone or an acorn and blowing them up to show their unique patterns and textures, we will discover how nature journaling helps us see everyday things with newfound appreciation. You will be invited to find a few of your own tiny natural objects for class to reference, or you can draw inspiration from the objects that Rosalie will work from in the class.

SUPPLIES: Journal, pen, colors and brush if you have them. Gather a few objects to dive into details such as textures and patterns: an acorn, a pinecone, a nut, a feather. A hand lens will be useful.

  • I made a handy-dandy PDF handout, "Tiny Worlds Takeaways," that summarizes today’s session and provides some extra information.
  • I uploaded my PowerPoint presentation to Sched and the file name is "Slideshow."
  • I also uploaded an in-depth booklet called "Materials Booklet", which is a compilation of my favorite materials with descriptions and links to each one.
ALSO! If you’d like to continue to learn with me, here are some options!
Thanks again, and I hope you continue to find beauty and curiosity in the tiniest aspects of nature... no matter where you look!

CREATIVE LETTERING FOR JOURNAL PAGES
Please click the VIDEO STREAM to view this class as a recording! This program is being presented exclusively for conference attendees, and is not to be shared or copied without permission of the presenter and conference organizer.

****

Beginning with a brief overview of letters, fonts, and styles, Deb will demonstrate how to create lettering: plain, cursive, and decorative. She will show various ways of adding color, gradations, shadows, and other bells and whistles to enhance your words and letters in your journal. Using page samples from her journals, Deb will problem-solve and demonstrate how to add text and lettering to a "finished" page. Questions and requested demonstrations are welcome!

SUPPLIES: Journal, pen, colors and brush if you have them.

UPDATE FROM DEB SENT OCT. 10 BY EMAIL:
So thrilled that you are participating in this awesome conference. It’s been amazing so far and I’m sure there are more great experiences yet to come.
I just want to give you a heads up about some handouts that I’ve posted, should you want to download them. You do not NEED them for the class, but you might like to have hard copies in hand. There are some font samples and a copy of graph paper that I will be using in my demonstration.
The writing tools I’ll be using are:
no-photo blue pencil;
pigma MICRON PN and 08 pen,
Gelly Roll #10 or #8 white pen,
uni POSCA PC-1M .7mm bullet shaped pens (various colors,)
PrismaColor pencils (colors on hand,)
chisel tip pens (ie: highlighters, sharpies,)
Absolutely none of these tools are necessary for you to have, this is just informational because I’ve noticed people ask a lot about tools used. :)
look forward to seeing you all on Sunday…
